SkinPen microneedling is a prescription treatment used for specific, cleared indications. If you are considering it for acne scars, the useful question is not whether microneedling is “good for everything.” It is whether the device, treatment area and your medical history fit the official intended use.
What SkinPen Is Cleared to Treat
SkinPen is intended to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and older across all Fitzpatrick skin types. It is also cleared to improve neck wrinkles in Fitzpatrick skin types II through IV. Other concerns should be discussed as separate, provider-evaluated uses rather than presented as cleared indications.
What Happens During Treatment
A professional appointment begins with a candidacy review and skin preparation. The provider uses a sterile, single-use needle cartridge and selects settings for the treatment area. Afterward, the provider gives you instructions for cleansing, sun protection and products during recovery.
An Important Product Boundary
The official SkinPen labeling states that the device is not intended for transdermal delivery of topical cosmetics, drugs or biologics. In plain language: the treatment should not be marketed as a way to drive exosomes, growth factors, PDRN or other biologic products beneath the skin. Any separate product or procedure needs its own candidacy, consent and provider explanation.
Who Should Not Receive SkinPen
The official contraindications include active skin cancer in the treatment area; open wounds, sores or irritated skin; allergy to stainless steel or anesthetics; a bleeding disorder or bleeding dysfunction; pregnancy or nursing; and current isotretinoin use. Additional health and skin conditions require precaution and provider review.
Recovery and Results
Redness, dryness, tightness, itching, peeling, discomfort and tenderness can occur after treatment. Recovery and results vary. Your provider should explain realistic expectations, give written aftercare and tell you when to seek help for an unexpected reaction.
